Libraries across Hertfordshire are promoting a number of self-help books as part of Hertfordshire Year of Mental Health.
The Reading Well Books on Prescription scheme helps people manage their mental health and wellbeing by reading specialised books on the subject.
Dr Caroline Whelan, a GP in Letchworth Garden City, said: "This now enables my patients to access these books for free at their local library, which is a brilliant resource."
As part of the scheme, the reading agency created a core list of titles for common conditions.
Around 16 per cent of Hertfordshire residents are though to have a mental health problem, such as anxiety or depression.
