Elton John has dedicated a park bench to life-long friend and Hornets legend Graham Taylor.

The bench appeared in Cassiobury Park on Monday, with a plaque captioned: "In loving memory of friend Graham Taylor".

Sir Elton recently thanked fans for their support as he recovered from a "potentially deadly" bacterial infection which forced him to cancel a number of performances.

Sir Elton John described Graham Taylor as "like a brother to me" following the former Watford manager's death at 72.

Watford Observer: Sir Elton John greets Graham Taylor at the start of his second spell as manager of Watford in 1996.

"We will cherish Graham and drown our sorrows in the brilliant memories he gave us," Sir Elton wrote on Instagram in January.

"This is a sad and dark day for Watford. The club and the town. We went on an incredible journey together and it will stay with me forever.

"I love you Graham. I will miss you very much."

Taylor - who lived in Kings Langley - died of a suspected heart attack on January 12. Hundreds gathered in Watford High Street for the funeral in February, but Elton was not present.

The bench is situated at the Rickmansworth Road entrance to the park

Watford Borough Council confirmed Sir Elton paid for the new bench and the planting of four magnolia trees in the park.

Elton appointed Taylor as Watford manager in 1977, a year after the singer took ownership of the club.

Within five years, Taylor took the Hornets from the old Fourth Division to runners-up in the top flight, going on to reach the 1984 FA Cup final.

It is thought Elton chose a bench as his monument to the manager he regarded as a brother because Taylor refused to shelter in a dugout at Watford until the Vicarage Road end, where the majority of Hornets fans used to get wet when it rained, was covered.

Watford legend Luther Blissett, who holds the club's goalscoring record, tweeted a picture of the bench – which will be unveiled officially at a ceremony later this month – and said: “The bench every Hornet should want to sit on! Glorious @eltonofficial thank you! #thankyouGT.”

There will be an official unveiling of the bench later this month.
