George Michael will be honoured with a blue plaque at his old school.

The plaque will be unveiled at Bushey Meads School, where the pop singer was a pupil, in April.

Michael, who died on Christmas Day in 2016 at the age of 53, was a sixth form student at Bushey Meads, Bushey, which was was where he met future Wham! bandmate, Andrew Ridgeley.

Blue plaques, awarded by English Heritage, commemorate individuals but are also as much about the building the person is associated with, which is seen as equally important. A plaque is erected if there is a surviving building closely connected with the person in question.

George Michael ‘superfan’ Terry Daniels has worked with the Heritage Foundation, alongside English Heritage, to organise a blue plaque, in George's memory.

Official blue plaques are only awarded 20 years after the recipient has died.

Mrs Daniels, who often socialised with Michael at his father’s restaurant in Edgware in the 1980s, was recommended by English Heritage to meet David Graham, chairman of the Heritage Foundation. She has worked alongside the foundation to arrange to have a plaque in Bushey that will commemorate Michael.

The unveiling, which will take place on April 15, will coincide with the opening of the new facilities at Bushey Meads.

It was at Bushey Meads where Michael formed The Executive, a five piece band made up of Michael, Ridgeley, David Austin, Paul Ridgeley, and Andrew Leaver.

The band performed publicly for the first time in 1979 at the Methodist Church Hall in Bushey.

Jeremy Turner, executive principal of Bushey Meads School, said “As a school community, the staff of Bushey Meads School continues to pay tribute to one of their more famous ex-students and give thanks for the very good aspects of his life and work for the many honourable charities he supported.”

Mrs Daniels added: “This is fantastic for Bushey and for all of his fans as well. I remember when I would see George at his dad’s restaurant just as Wham! were becoming the next big thing.”

Mrs Daniels also helped spearhead ‘George Michael Day UK’, with the support of children’s charity Childline, which will launch on June 25, 2018.

Founder of the George Michael Appreciation Society, Tracey Wills, paid tribute to Michael a year on from his death with a tribute at St James's Church in Bushey.

The plaque unveiling at Bushey Meads in April will be followed by a charity luncheon at The Hilton Hotel, Watford, with well-known George Michael tribute artist Rob Lamberti performing, alongside a host of celebrities, who will be attending.

There is hope that plaques will also be erected in Goring, Oxfordshire and in Highgate.
