Fretting about how you are going to keep your children occupied this weekend? Well fret no more, because here are the best cheap events in Watford - and a few things kids can do at home.
New Hope Community Market Garden Open Day
Come and enjoy the creative achievements of service user volunteers and at the same time give your garden vibrant colour this summer by picking up a range of plants, vegetable seedlings, herbs and craft items. Experience storytelling in a garden yurt, take part in percussion workshops and children’s craft activities, and enjoy poetry readings throughout the day. Free entry.
Community Market Garden, 64 Rickmansworth Road, Watford, Saturday, June 2, 10.30am to 3pm
Big Bandstand
This year will once again see a season of great music every Sunday afternoon. There will be everything from jazz to ukulele pouring out of the bandstand for park visitors.
Bring a picnic or just soak up the sounds while enjoying the park in all its glory.
Sundays, May to September, Cassiobury Park
Fire Museum Open Day
Visit the only fire-related museum in Hertfordshire and see the history of firefighting from the early days. Try on firefighters’ uniforms and breathing apparatus, and learn all about horse-drawn fire pumps from the 19th century. Free entry.
Fire Station, Lower High Street, Watford, Saturday, June 2, 1pm to 4pm
Go for a walk
Watford has lots of parks and green spaces in which to soak up the (hopefully) sunny weather. From the wide open green spaces of Cassiobury Park to the lake at Rickmansworth Aquadrome, there’s no reason not to get the kids outside. Why not take a walk along the Grand Union Canal or cycle along the Ebury Way?
Have a water fight
Nothing beats a good water fight on a hot day and it’s a fun way of keeping everyone cool. Instead of forking out for water guns, use empty washing up liquid bottles as they have the squeeze factor. Make sure bottles are thoroughly cleaned out before filling with water and blasting your friends.
Make a den
You don’t have to leave the comfort of home to enjoy the sun. Use tents, tables and umbrellas to make a fun garden den. Two dining chairs and a king size duvet cover will make a great cover for shade and kids will love hanging out under it.
Outdoor slumber party
As the weather cools in the evening it’s nice to make the most of the outdoors, so gather all the cushions in the house to make a giant comfy square on the floor in the garden.
Add bed sheets over the top to keep them together and add extra comfort. Use a torch in a pint glass to create a light and take it in turns telling stories and playing board games.
