Watford Borough Council is starting to prepare its new Local Plan, which is the start to setting a vision for Watford up to 2036.

It will also guide planning decisions and new development.

It sets out key issues, such as how many jobs are needed in the town and where housing should go.

One of the biggest challenges facing Watford is providing new homes for the growing population, with very little land available.

The government has said Watford must provide 770 new homes every year up until 2036.

Whilst saying no to growth is not an option, the council wants to work with residents and businesses to decide how best to manage it and shape the town for the future.

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor, said: “We need residents to work with us on this new Local Plan to ensure Watford continues to be a vibrant and thriving town.

“Managing the growth that is coming is going to be tricky but we are determined to make it work in Watford’s favour. Part of that means making sure that the right transport and other essential infrastructure is in place.

“We must also make sure that local residents have excellent employment opportunities and access to quality housing. This is about making sure decisions about our town are made here in Watford, with the help of local people.

“We have so much to be positive about as a town.

“Our town centre is attracting new shops and restaurants and we have many award-winning parks, excellent transport links, wonderful entertainment and leisure facilities, and we’re home to a growing number of prosperous businesses. It is vital that local people are in charge of the change that is happening in our town. Taking part in this will mean that you can have your say on the future of Watford.”

Once this first stage of the consultation has been completed, the results will be analysed and a Draft Local Plan - which will include draft policies intended to deal with future applications for development - will be put together.

Towards the end of 2019, a consultation on the Draft Local Plan itself will be held, once again asking for views.
