Members of the Watford Liberal Democrat party were among 700,000 protesters who marched through London on Saturday demanding a people’s vote.

Following the record-breaking march, the party once again called for Watford MP Richard Harrington to back the people’s vote too.

Last week, Watford Borough Council unanimously passed a motion calling for a vote on the final Brexit deal.

Nascot ward councillor Mark Hofman, who was on the march on Saturday, said, “It was fantastic to join nearly 700,000 marchers to make the point that we need a real people's vote on the final Brexit deal. It's clear that the direction the Brexit negotiations is taking is not what people voted for two years ago.

“If you couldn't make the march but support a people's vote, I'd urge you to get in touch with your local MP. They must know about the strength of feeling for a people's vote across the country.”

Cllr Ian Stotesbury, Liberal Democrat councillor for Callowland, added: “It’s clear that the mood surrounding Brexit is shifting. More and more people are seeing the mess that is unfolding and want a final say on any deal that comes out of the Brexit negotiations, and the option to remain if they are not happy with it.

“We call on Richard Harrington to listen to people in Watford and back a people's vote in parliament on the final Brexit deal.”

Campaign group ‘Watford for Europe’ were also on the march and chairman John Maguire says he has been pushing for Mr Harrington to “listen to people’s views”.

He wrote to the MP: “Many people have become aware of the catastrophic dangers of leaving the EU, since the referendum over 2 years ago. Are you really going to deny them a chance to reconsider? If you do, surely this is not democratic.

“The government have shown themselves completely inept in negotiation and we are the laughing stock of Europe. How can you therefore continue to support the Government position when you know that we will all be worse off?

“I hope, even at this late stage, that you will have a change of heart and support the people's vote with an option to remain. This is the only democratic way forward.”

Although Mr Harrington backed the remain campaign, he has consistently backed Theresa May’s Brexit plans and says he will “respect” the decision to leave.
