A young member of the One YMCA youth club has picked up a special award recognising the obstacles he has had to overcome in his life.

Charlie Squires, 16, who attends the club in Watford, was nominated for the YMCA England Youth Matters Young Achiever of the Year award and following an online vote and ceremony, Charlie won the top prize.

At the ceremony, which was held last month in London, Charlie, who lives in Croxley, gave a passionate speech where he thanked Barry O’Grady and Viktoria Tchibor from the youth team for the help and guidance they have given Charlie throughout his journey.

Mr O’Grady said: “This award recognises the exceptional achievements of a young person who has overcome significant obstacles to make a real difference to their own lives and their community.

“We are very pleased to announce that Charlie won the award. He was very overwhelmed but gave a fantastic, passionate and engaging speech.

“It was a fantastic evening listening to all the finalists’ stories and their journeys which demonstrate how our services support and provide a heartbeat to our communities whilst giving young people the opportunity to belong, contribute and thrive.

“Congratulations Charlie, you are an inspirational young man.”
