It might not be snowing as heavily where you are right now but that didn’t stop hundreds, if not thousands of drivers, packing up and making a quick getaway this afternoon.

It’s absolute gridlock on the roads, which is nothing unusual but it's even worse tonight.

Whether that is a combination of everyone rushing off at once, poorly gritted roads, or annoying roadworks, it doesn’t paint a pretty picture.

We're in Watford Business Park and cars are at a standstill and have been for some time.

Check below to avoid some of the worst affected areas out there across our region.

Watford Observer:

• Major delays on the A404 in Chorleywood because of a burst water main. Traffic is virtually stationary from Rickmansworth all the way to Common Lane. Plenty of traffic heading into Rickmansworth too from the south of the town. Travel time could be up to 90 minutes. It is having a knock-on affect too on roads out of Northwood.

• Heavy traffic on the M25 from near j22 for London Colney round to j18 for Rickmansworth

• Severe delays clockwise on the M25 between j21 for the M1 and j24 for Potters Bar. Two lanes are shut due to a broken vehicle between j23 and j24. It means roads around Potters Bar are very busy, including Mutton Lane towards the town.

  • Gridlock on the M1 northbound from before j4 all the way up to Redbourn.

• Long queues in Bushey Heath. Temporary lights in High Road near the Tesco Express petrol station are not helping matters. Heathbourne Road and Elstree Road affected.

• Delays on virtually every road in Watford town centre particularly along Rickmansworth Road into town, Hempstead Road out of town, the A4008 out of Watford towards the M1, and both directions in Tolpits Lane. Queues also on Wiggenhall Road towards Oxhey.

• Busy in Kings Langley approaching the junction of the M25 and A41.

• Delays between Borehamwood and Elstree along Barnet Lane, on Radlett Road between Aldenham and Radlett, and Watling Street at the junction of Harper Lane.

• Heavy traffic too in St Albans, especially at the Park Street roundabout and Holywell Hill.

Local roads are beginning to struggle now as more snow settles, especially in more hilly and rural areas.

And if you need to head out towards the Chilterns and Buckinghamshire, the area has seen very heavy snowfall and journeys there should only be if necessary.

Gritters will be out around the county tonight and drivers are advised to drive appropriately for the conditions.

Even the mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, has been caught up in the chaos.
