Dog walkers need not worry about trespassing after a footpath was officially recognised on the map after 50-year wait.

When Affinity Water built its The Grove pumping station and regional offices at the bottom of Hempstead Road in the 1950s, it cut off two footpaths.

Until now the two unofficial replacement footpaths, much loved by dog walkers, could have been blocked at any time by the landowners and no-one could have stopped them.

However now all official maps will show the newly designated paths from Hempstead Road, around the pumping station to the Grand Union Canal towpath.

Hertfordshire County Council, Watford Borough Council, Affinity Water and the Canal and River Trust, co-ordinated by the county council’s definitive map officer, officially placed the paths on the map.

Peter Taylor, Elected Mayor of Watford said “I am delighted that this long-standing problem has finally been put to bed.

“I want to thank those dedicated organisations and residents who have fought to achieve this.

“It is also really pleasing to see so many organisations, and particularly Watford Council, working so well together to achieve this.”

Cllr Phil Bibby, Hertfordshire County Council's executive member for highways and environment said “Dealing with obstructions and diversions of rights of way can be a complex process.

“I’m very pleased that in this case progress has been made and I know all involved have worked hard to reach a satisfactory outcome, even though it has taken a long time.

“I hope the new route will be well used and enjoyed.”
