Reading Paul Welsh's fascinating story of saving the Elstree Studios reminded me of the very small part I played in the story.
As a new councillor of less than a year's service I vividly remember the full council meeting where we heard the news that Brent Walker were prepared to sell Hertsmere the Studios rather than go to court.
The meeting was adjourned for about half an hour for the different political groups to decide what to do. The Labour Group was unanimous: we must save the studios.
We returned for the vote, the Labour and Liberal Democrat Groups unanimously in favour, the Conservatives disappointingly did not support the purchase but with our very small majority we were able to carry the day.
The rest, as they say, is history.
