What possesses Prof Christine Wheeler to persist in trying to debunk and dispute man-made climate change (CO2 is not a problem, Letters, September 20)? Only she will know.

When 97 per cent of the world’s leading climate scientists are united in concluding the world is lurching towards climate change, she’s just wasting her breath and emitting more ‘trace gas’ we don’t need.

Does she also believe the earth is flat?

Climate change deniers seize on specifics or use proof by exception. Launching into a lecture on planet Earth over its billion year history, she attempts to compress changes in the climate that occurred over millions of years and contrast them with the alarming increase and severity in extreme weather events we are witnessing today.

‘CO2 was 1,100 per cent of today’s level back in the Ice Age’ she assures us. Yes. And we weren’t!

And it’s not a period we want to revisit unless we want to be extinct like the dinosaurs.

‘Technically we are still in an ice age’ she tells us. Exactly. Yet the world is on fire. Literally.

So it isn’t about sun spots, Christine, as you would have us believe.

Maybe it has something to do with our trashing the world’s rainforests and releasing the gigatonnes of the sun’s energy locked up over millions of years in the form of fossil fuels in an instant in the lifetime of the planet. The heat of a hundred volcanoes erupting relentlessly around the globe.

Is it any wonder the world is being cooked?
