I am writing in response to Dave Degan’s letter of October 18 (End homeless deaths) in order to clarify the provision for single adults who are homeless in Watford. New Hope provides accommodation each night for up to 66 people, including 20 beds for people who are in crisis. This emergency accommodation replaced the old night shelter in Rickmansworth Road more than 15 years ago and is currently at capacity. We are therefore, in conjunction with Watford Borough Council and One YMCA, providing additional beds over the winter. This humanitarian provision, Watford’s Winter Shelter, will run from December 1 to March 31.

Sadly, there has been an increase in homelessness and rough sleeping, not just in Watford but across the country. New Hope, alongside Watford Borough Council and other agencies in the town, is doing all it can to provide comprehensive support to people who are currently sleeping rough. This support includes help from specialists in substance misuse, alcohol misuse and mental health.
We also provide practical humanitarian assistance through the provision of hot food, clean clothes, laundry facilities and sleeping bags. Unfortunately, due to damage, loss and theft, we frequently give out sleeping bags to those who are in need and are grateful to the many members of the community who donate much-needed items, such as sleeping bags, hats, socks and underwear.
