Drivers across Watford could face months of delays because of numerous schemes to improve water quality.
Affinity Water has work scheduled in all corners of the town, beginning today (Monday) in Rickmansworth Road and Whippendell Road.
This week will also see the start of another scheme - in Gammons Lane - over a period of six weeks.
The water company is carrying out lead replacement programmes - Affinity Water describes this as "essential roadworks" where pipes are replaced to ensure a high quality and reliable supply of water is maintained for communities, for many years to come.
These schemes are completed in stages with engineers moving slowly down the street until the whole road has been done.
Over the weekend, Hertfordshire County Council warned the schemes by Affinity Water need to take place before the summer holidays because of other larger schemes taking place around the town.
There are also emergency roadworks being carried out by Affinity Water in Grove Mill Lane at the junction of Hempstead Road this week.

Hagden Lane - March 23 to June 26, temporary traffic lights (between junctions of Queens Avenue and Vicarage Road)
Langley Road - January 20 to February 28, temporary traffic lights
Queens Avenue - June 29 to July 31, road closure
Windsor Road - March 2 to March 13, road closure
Bedford Street - March 2 to March 13, road closure
Cardiff Road - February 24 to March 6, road closure
The Chase - February 17 to February 21 and March 2 to March 20, road closure
Tucker Street - March 16 to March 27, road closure
Affinity Water will also carry out work in the following streets in Croxley Green
