Cycle hub being built at Elstree & Borehamwood station

Govia Thameslink Railway was awarded funding from the Department for Transport and Hertfordshire County Council to make improvements for cyclists across the rail network and £190,000 will be invested at Elstree & Borehamwood station.

Construction is underway on a two-tier system will be created to fit 100 bikes in a cycle hub.

The new LED-lit hub will also have CCTV, a maintenance area, bike detection system and cyclists will be able to access it for free with key cards.

Thameslink's head of environment, Jason Brooker, said: "Getting to the station by bike is not only good for the environment, but it has multiple health benefits for the cyclist. We also hope that people will feel more confident leaving their bikes at the station thanks to the new well-lit cycle hub and CCTV."

Elstree and Borehamwood town mayor, Councillor Simon Rubner, added: "I would like to offer my thanks and support to Thameslink for the improvements they are making to our station to encourage people to leave their cars at home.

"Cycling is good exercise for the rider, helps reduce congestion on our roads and helps keep our environment free of pollution."

This investment in a cycle hub comes after a £1.5m makeover of Elstree & Borehamwood station, which was completed last year.

The project saw the concourse at the station double in size and there are extra ticket gates and accessible toilets.

There is now a larger Nisa mini-supermarket and Costa Coffee has also opened.

The station has been significantly enhanced through the work of First Impressions and its chairman Bob Redman. Hollywood ‘stars in the pavement’ and giant murals celebrate the town’s screen heritage.

A ceremony was held in September to mark the official re-opening of the station, which honoured former stationmaster Don O'Brien who died in 2018 aged 72.
