Research has shown Watford has one of the highest percentage of electric vehicles on its roads.

Price comparison website Compare the Market has analysed the UK's cities, towns, and boroughs to find out where is the most environmentally-friendly when it comes to driver's choice of vehicle.

It turns out that Watford drivers are embracing the eco-friendly alternatives to diesel and petrol cars, as it ranks sixth on a list of electric vehicle hotspots out of 358 local authorities.

The data shows there are 1,444 electric vehicles in Watford, with 67,620 in total.

This works out as a percentage of 2.14.

While London and Birmingham had the most electric vehicles overall (28,907 and 18,988 respectively), the city with the highest proportion of electric vehicles was actually Peterborough, where 5.27 per cent of vehicles are electric, which works out at about one in every 20.

This was followed by the Forest of Dean (4.57 per cent) and Slough (3.45 per cent).

Hertsmere features a little further down the list at 29th with 518 electric vehicles - this is 0.81 per cent of the total number of vehicles in Hertsmere.

While Three Rivers comes in at 37th with 463 electric vehicles - 0.76 per cent of the total number of vehicles on the road in the district, which is the same as St Albans district, although there are 683 electric vehicles in St Albans.

Watford borough councillor Iain Sharpe has welcomed the data and says the council wants the town to be environmentally-friendly.

He said: "It's great that so many Watford residents are doing their bit for sustainable transport and to tackle climate change.

"Watford Borough Council has taken a lead in providing more electric vehicle charging points across the town to enable people to make the switch to electric vehicles.

"Alongside the very high use of our new bike share scheme, this shows there is an appetite in the town for more environmentally-friendly forms of transport."

There are nearly 250,000 electric vehicles on UK roads.

Dan Hutson, head of motor insurance at comparethemarket.com, said: "Not so long ago, the number of electric vehicles on the road was a lot smaller. The UK didn’t have the infrastructure in place and many people considered switching to electric as too expensive.

"It's great to see that in a relatively short amount of time, this has started to turn and the UK is well on its way to achieving the government's targets of going electric and banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035.

"With almost a quarter of a million electric vehicles on UK roads, and the number rising constantly, the UK is becoming a nation of more eco-conscious and ‘greener’ motorists."
