Memories of a young actress’ visit to Watford in the 1960s have been rekindled after these pictures were posted in our nostalgia Facebook group, We grew up in Watford.

Jane Asher initially made her name as a child actress in the 1950s, but in the following decade she was also to become the girlfriend of Paul McCartney.

These pictures were shared in our Facebook group by member Steve Anthony, but a quick look back through our archives tells the story behind the the image below of her in a shop and with the Beatle.

Watford Observer:

Miss Asher was starring as Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion at the Palace Theatre in 1965 and was snapped shopping for an evening gown in the town’s department store Clements in connection with the production.

We republished this photo in 2013 and this prompted former Watford Observer photographer Mike Dellow to get in touch with the image of the then 19-year-old and the pop star leaving the theatre.

Mr Dellow wrote: “Seeing your recent photo of Jane Asher in the Nostalgia column, I thought you might be interested in a picture I took while working for the WO of Jane rushing from her last performance with boyfriend Paul McCartney.”
