Staff who worked at the now shut John Lewis department store at intu have held a charity sale to raise money for an animal trust.

Kind-hearted former staff members sold off end of lines and ex-display stock from the store, which closed in July, and donated the proceeds to charity.

A total of £2,510 was donated to Watford’s rescue and rehoming centre, the National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT), which closed to the public due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This meant it lost income from its café and cancelled fundraising events.

The donation will fund a new kitchen at the trust to prepare the animals’ meals - NAWT says the current one is "run down".

The rescue centre still needs to fix the leaky and draughty roofs for the kennel blocks for winter.

NAWT Watford centre manager Jackie de Friez said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to the John Lewis Watford team for choosing to give the NAWT this amazing donation from its charity sale.

“With the centre forced to close to the public throughout the coronavirus pandemic, we’re grateful for every penny. We’d love it if there’s another local business out there that can help us fix the kennel roofs to keep our dogs warm and cosy this winter.”
