A major roundabout has reopened following a gas leak earlier today.

Cadent, which manages the local gas network, has been working at the Dome Roundabout by Asda all day following the leak which occurred in the early hours.

The gas company has confirmed this evening that it has stopped the leak with a temporary repair.

While works were carried out during the day, the Dome Roundabout was partially closed on the Asda side and there was also no access into St Albans Road towards north Watford.

But a traffic camera shows motorists heading northbound are now able to access the Dome Roundabout.

A large work area has been dug out by St Albans Road, although there is room for motorists to manouvere in.

Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue tweeted they were made aware of a suspected gas leak at 4.40am.

Cadent said it had found a leak on a pipe that runs underneath the A41.

While it has stopped the leak with a temporary repair, the gas company said it will need specialist kit to make a permanent fix.

Earlier today, a spokesman for Cadent said: "We had reports of a smell of gas in the area and have found a leak on a pipe that runs underneath the A41, near The Dome roundabout.

"If anyone smells gas in the local area, it’s very important to report that immediately to the national gas emergency number 0800 111 999. Don’t assume it’s related to this - it may not be and we must investigate it."
