BASINGSTOKE continues to see a rise in Covid cases, as the latest figures are released. 

The figures, for the seven days to December 30, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Basingstoke has reported 667 cases of the virus in the seven days to December 30, at a rate of 377.7 cases per 100,000 people. This is up from 37.8 per cent from the previous seven days up to December 26 where 484 cases were recorded.

Data for the most recent four days (January 1-4) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 292 (93 per cent) have seen a rise in case rates, 22 (7 per cent) have seen a fall, and one is unchanged.

Elsewhere in Hampshire, Rushmoor has been named as the local authority area with the second biggest week on week increase in cases after Carlisle.

Rushmoor recorded 1036 in the seven days to December 30, giving it a rolling rate of 1,095.1 cases per 100,000 people with an increase of 68.5 per cent on the previous seven day period.

Neighbouring local authority areas Hart, Test Valley and Winchester are now classified as hotspots with above average rolling rates of 652.1, 407.4 and 430.1 cases

Barking & Dagenham in London continues to have the highest rate in England, with 3,143 new cases recorded in the seven days to December 31 – the equivalent of 1,476.2 cases per 100,000 people.

This is up from 1,106.1 in the seven days to December 24.

Thurrock in Essex as the second highest rate, up slightly from 1,371.5 to 1,389.2, with 2,422 new cases.

Redbridge in London is in third place, rising from 1,177.5 to 1,381.9 with 4,218 new cases.
