A councillor is calling for urgent attention to disregarded side roads that need resurfacing.

Raphael Drive and Brocklesbury Close by the Radlett Road estate are among the roads that Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst believes are in “desperate need” of resurfacing.

The roads feature quite a few potholes and serves around 800 residents in the local estate.

After addressing his concerns to Hertfordshire County Council and senior Highways officers, Cllr Giles-Medhurst believes the roads are being overlooked and ignored because they are not main roads.

He said: “The county is not even prepared to fill in the holes pending a full resurface. Even if the county council agreed that a full resurface would only be done after the new housing on the Centre Point site is finished, that would be something, but so far they have not.

“It’s a disgrace. I have escalated this to senior highways officers, demanding an explanation and a time scale for resurfacing.”

Talking about his concerns, he said: “It’s just not good enough for the County Council to ignore these roads just because they are not main roads.

“What is even worse is that the Conservative-run County Council is proposing to cut £8m from side road maintenance claiming they are better than expected. Clearly they have never been to the Radlett Road Estate.”

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council claims the highways maintenance team will visit the site in the “near future”.

The spokesperson said: “Raphael Drive and Brocklesbury Close are not currently on our resurfacing programme, however our highways maintenance team will be visiting them in the near future to assess the condition of the road surface and determine if any maintenance is needed.”
