A flood alert remains in place on a river this week after persistent and heavy rainfall.

Water levels along the River Colne in the Watford area continue to cause concern for the Environment Agency, with an alert in place for at least a week now.

The Environment Agency, which has been keeping a close eye on the river's levels, issued this update today, warning flooding is possible in areas close to the river.

The update read: "Due to recent wet weather, river levels across the Middle River Colne catchment are high. River levels peaked overnight and are steady, and expected to remain high today, Monday February 8.

"There is likely to be flooding to low lying land and roads close to the river in the Watford and Rickmansworth areas. Flooding from surface water, where water gathers and flows off road surfaces, could also occur."

The Environment Agency continued: "Some light snow showers are forecast over the next few days and this is likely to remain on the ground. This is expected to allow river levels to continue falling slowly over the next few days before the snow melts. You should avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.

"We are constantly monitoring river levels and we have staff on standby to clear blockages if required."

Last week, a flood warning was issued for the River Colne in the Rickmansworth area, with residents near the river "urged to take action" to protect their property.

In Watford, parks like Cassiobury Park and Oxhey Park flooded, while images showed two cars stranded in floodwater in Water Lane in the town centre.
