A councillor is calling for more grit bins to be introduced following an incident where he had "no control” of his car when driving down a snowy road.

Liberal Democrat Three Rivers District councillor Andrew Scarth wants two grit bins to be placed in Holmside Rise and Brampton Road following his “worrying experience”.

The incident occurred when Cllr Scarth had been delivering free winter grit bags - provided by the Parish council - to houses in his Oxhey Hall and Hayling ward, including in Holmside Rise.

But when the councillor drove down the road, which he said was "full of snow", Cllr Scarth said his car was “sliding all the way down the hill” despite approaching it carefully.

“It was a nightmare”, he said.

“I had no control over it until luckily I came to a stop without hitting any cars or people when I reached Embleton Road.”

“I then thought, ‘where’s the grit bin’?”

Cllr Scarth said he found one in nearby Fairhaven Crescent, although said there was none in Holmside Rise or neighbouring Brampton Road.

He decided to ask Hertfordshire County Council for grit bins to be placed in the two roads, although was told that action over this had not been required “at this time”.

But Cllr Scarth believes the response from the council “was both surprising and very disappointing”.

He said: “These roads are not gritted as they are not on a bus route nor do they have a school next to them.

"How steep does a road have to be and how many accidents are required to get these grit bins in the right place for tax paying residents to use in the winter time?"

The council said in a statement: “Hertfordshire has over 1,100 bins across the county and it is not possible to move them or provide new ones this winter season (October 2020 to April 2021). There is however a salt bin review being undertaken at the moment for deployment during next year’s winter season.”
