Ruislip Lido will be under various restrictions to clamp down on overcrowding and prevent social distancing chaos seen during the first lockdown.

Last year on May 25 and May 31, hundreds of people flocked to the lido to make the most of the sunny weather, causing social distancing concerns.

The popular site near Harrow and Rickmansworth became so overly crowded after several warnings, that Hillingdon Council temporarily closed the beach area until October 2020.

At the time, the council announced they "do not have the resources” to monitor the area and ensure social distancing is maintained.

And even after the site was closed off, trespassers were seen jumping the fence in attempt to access the lido.

With some lockdown restrictions soon easing and before the Easter break, Hillingdon Council says the lido will operate differently this year to prevent similar scenes.

A spokesperson for Hillingdon Council said: “From Easter, on a trial basis, we will be limiting the number of visitors allowed at Ruislip Lido at any one time to 1,200, and council marshals will be on site to assist.

“This will allow people to keep visiting the Lido, while ensuring everyone remains safe.

“Social distancing remains crucial in all our parks, so please remember to follow the latest government guidance and stay at least two metres apart from anyone you don’t live with. And please help to keep our borough clean and tidy by taking any rubbish home with you.”

Since the lido reopened people have returned to the site in small numbers despite the cold weather.

In fact, when much of England was covered in snow in February, there were reported sightings of people swimming in the waters.

As a precaution the new surveillance at the lido should help prevent overcrowding.
