A county councillor is calling for a review into the way two sets of traffic merge at a busy junction which he says is prone to accidents.

Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst says people have raised concerns with him over the junction, which connects Chalk Hill and Aldenham Road, by the Victoria Pub near Bushey Station.

The junction sees motorists approaching from the Arches and from the opposite direction of Bushey High Street, with the two lanes of traffic then merging onto Aldenham Road.

Cllr Giles-Medhurst says the “staggering of the timing of the lights is not good enough and is confusing for most motorists”.

This is because as the two lanes merge onto Aldenham Road, drivers may end up being in a position where they are fighting over getting into the left or right lane.

Hertfordshire County Council has said it plans to review signal timings and phasing later this year.

Cllr Giles-Medhurst says there have been several accidents at the junction in the past and that the problem “seems to have got worse recently”.

He said: "There have been a number of personal injury accidents in the last five years and many more damage only ones.

“All the guard rails at this junction are either wrecked or damaged due to collisions.”

Cllr Giles-Medhurst, who is the group leader of Hertfordshire Liberal Democrats, added that county council officers have visited the site and think the terminal bars of the KEEP CLEAR road markings may be confused with the STOP lines and that the phasing of the lights could be a problem.

He said: "The guard rails are already set back more than normal and they maybe need to be changed and repositioned - we cannot have the sort of damage that is regularly occurring, costing money and endangering lives.”

A county council spokesperson said: “We’re planning to attend to the signals at this junction later this year as part of our planned refurbishment programme.  As part of that work we will also review signal timings and phasing.”
