A massive clean up operation has been undertaken in Watford town centre following the Hornets' promotion to the Premier League yesterday.

The High Street and the pond were left littered with rubbish as fans converged on the area to celebrate Watford FC’s 1-0 victory over Millwall at Vicarage Road.

Several fans jumped into the pond as they celebrated the club’s return to the pinnacle of English football at the first time of asking.

Pictures from the celebrations show beer cans and bottles among items left in the pond, despite people being urged by Watford Borough Council not to litter.

However, the town centre now looks to be almost spotless after the council’s contracted waste managers Veolia got to work this morning.

Roy Moore, leader of Hornets supporters’ group 1881, has offered to pay Watford Borough Council the costs of the clean-up; the council has declined the offer but took to Twitter to thank him for the kind gesture.

Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor was in the town centre this morning to check in on the clean-up.

He took to Facebook to say: “Just been in the town centre to thank the hardworking team at Veolia for all their work this morning. They’ve been there since the early hours clearing away litter.

“The High Street is already looking much cleaner and they are on the case to clean out the pond this morning. I’m so grateful to them for their dedication.

“It’s important we all take responsible for our rubbish and always put it in a bin or take it home with us!”
