A fans group offered to pay the costs of cleaning up the town centre following Watford’s promotion to the Premier League.

The Hornets won promotion with a 1-0 win at home to Millwall yesterday afternoon.

The victory secured them a place in the Premier League at the first time of asking, following relegation the previous season.

In an outpouring of joy, fans descended on Watford town centre to celebrate the victory.

However, scenes were marred by littering, with empty beer bottles and cans being left in the pond and along the High Street.

Roy Moore, who runs the 1881 fans’ group, got in touch with Watford Borough Council to offer to pay for the costs of the clean-up operation.

The council has thanked Roy for his offer, but says the costs are covered by its contract with waster managers Veolia.

Despite this, the council took to twitter to voice its appreciation for the offer, saying: “Thank you @Roymoore_Hornet and @The1881_wfc for the offer.

“This is what makes @WatfordFC the 'Original Family Club! Huge thanks to @VeoliaUK for all their hard work and prompt clean-up.”
