A virtual cycling fundraiser has raised more than £50,000 for a local charity to help it in its fight against Parkinson’s.

More than 300 people from across the world, including rugby legend Mark Tindall, took park in the 'Raid Local 2021: Ventoux' event in support of Cure Parkinson’s, a charity founded in Rickmansworth and Croxley.

Riders were encouraged to take on a route of their choice, in their local area or on the virtual cycling platform Zwift, inspired by Mont Ventoux, one of the most famous climbs of the Tour de France.

People could challenge themselves against the equivalent distance (42.8km) and vertical ascent (1,639m) as Ventoux, or simply choose their own mountain.

Team members included many people living with Parkinson’s, Cure Parkinson’s CEO Will Cook from Chorleywood and Tindall, who is a Cure Parkinson’s Patron.

A total of £53,000 has been raised so far.

Mr Cook, who cycled 208km with over 4000m of ascent, said: “My Raid Local was certainly a challenge: 10 hours in the saddle really focuses the mind.  I continue to be inspired by an amazing group of people, especially those with Parkinson’s, who take on endurance challenges to raise funds for this wonderful charity.

“Respect and thanks to all the riders in Raid Local 2021, whether on local roads or on Zwift, and their sponsors and supporters. With your help, we will find a cure.”

Members of the Drops Le Col women’s cycling team also supported the event, along with Frankie Hall from the Loughborough Lightening Cycling team.
