Roadworks at a busy junction are causing even longer delays than usual for motorists.

Temporary traffic lights are in place near Bushey Arches, with the roadworks scheduled to last for another month.

The roadworks have already been causing severe queues on several routes into Bushey Arches, particularly from Waterfields Way.

Hertfordshire County Council says the roadworks are to allow the traffic signals at the junction of Aldenham Road and Chalk Hill to be refurbished, with a pedestrian crossing also being upgraded.

The council says the phasing of the new signals is also being changed to reduce accidents.

Earlier this year, Stephen Giles-Medhurst, who is a county councillor for the area, called for a review into the way two sets of traffic merge.

Cllr Giles-Medhurst said in March: "There have been a number of personal injury accidents in the last five years and many more damage only ones.

"All the guard rails at this junction are either wrecked or damaged due to collisions.”

He added the junction was "endangering lives".

The new timings will see traffic in Chalk Hill from Bushey Arches, and London Road, from the direction of Bushey, move into Aldenham Road, by The Victoria pub, separately.

It’s understood this will temporary for now to see what impact it has on traffic flow.

The work is scheduled to be completed by August 6, but it could be done sooner.

A county council spokesperson said today: "The pedestrian crossings are being upgraded to Puffin-style crossings and new energy-efficient LED traffic lights are being installed.

"The phasing of the signals is also being changed to reduce accidents.

"We’d like to thank road users for bearing with us while we complete these important works."
