A proposal to create a low traffic scheme on an estate was withdrawn after not enough support was shown for it during a consultation.

Hertfordshire County Council was considering implementing some changes to the Cassiobury estate in Watford using some Government funding.

The changes could have seen roadblocks or width restrictions installed on streets including Woodland Drive, Cassiobury Drive, and Parkside Drive.

Often during rush hour, these streets can be used by motorists trying to avoid the congestion on Hempstead Road.

The low traffic neighbourhood scheme went out to public consultation earlier this year along with several other proposals across Hertfordshire.

Following the conclusion of the consultation, the Cassiobury scheme failed to appear on a list of eight proposals which are set to become a reality thanks to £6.4 million funding from the Government's Active Travel Fund.

This is a fund which is designed to make towns and cities in the country more environmentally-friendly, encouraging more suitable routes of transport like cycling or walking.

A county council spokesperson said: "The proposed creation of a low traffic neighbourhood at the Cassiobury Estate in Watford gained 56 per cent support during the engagement process, and it was subsequently decided to not take the scheme forward at this stage.

"Upon reviewing where these have worked well elsewhere, such schemes have had significant public support above what this proposal has received."

Other schemes mooted for Watford but also failed to appear on the final list of eight was improving cycling links between Watford Business Park and Cassiobury Park, as well as upgrading cycle lanes in the town centre.

The spokesperson said: "We continue to consider ways to improve cycle lanes in Market Street and High Street, working with Watford Borough Council.

"In terms of upgrading cycling provision between Watford Business Park and Cassiobury Park, it was clear that more work was needed to find the right solution for that area following the engagement period.

"We hope to be able to plan similar work at other locations in the future, depending on funding being made available. All feedback provided during initial engagement with the relevant communities earlier this year was taken into consideration when deciding which schemes to progress."

Two schemes in Watford that look set to go ahead is a remodelling of the junction of Stratford Way and Hempstead Road to incorporate a new cycle lane.

A temporary cycle lane in Wiggenhall Road is also set to become permanent.

Phil Bibby, executive member for highways and transport at Hertfordshire County Council, said: "We are committed to creating a much-improved environment for pedestrians and cyclists across Hertfordshire, so encouraging healthier travel and reducing pollution are clearly fundamental to this.

"These proposed schemes will encourage and empower many more people to travel in an active and environmentally-friendly way, which in turn will deliver significant long-term benefits to the health and wellbeing of our residents and reduce our impact on the environment.

"We would like as many of our residents as possible to give their views through the consultation, so we can make sure that the schemes are delivered with our communities in mind."
