The British Army’s national tennis team joined Rickmansworth Tennis Club to celebrate its 100-year anniversary.

The Meadow Way-based club was established in 1921 and is celebrating its centenary.

The British Army played a match against club players as a warm-up event for their national inter-services tournament against the Royal Marines and Royal Air Force which takes place in two weeks at Wimbledon.

The British Army team featured ex-Davis Cup and European tour players.

The match format was six singles matches and three doubles matches, with the British Army victorious, eventually succeeding six matches to three.

Representing Rickmansworth were: Joe Randall, Chris Grassick, Neil Grassick, Ollie Smith, Andy Parkes, Peter Manfield, Eamonn Bownes and Mark O’Brien.

Team captain, Mark O’Brien said that it was “an absolute pleasure” to welcome the British Army boys to Rickmansworth.

Club chairman Liz Mills added that in the club’s 100-year history, there were many past chairmen and presidents who had served in the Armed Forces.

“It is thus a fitting tribute in our centenary year to have the British Army come to our club,” she said.

British Army captain Ben Rogers said he was delighted that Rickmansworth could arrange the match during these challenging times and that the standard of opposition was great preparation for their inter-services tournament. "
