MP Dean Russell has given his views on taking the knee and revealed he would never boo the England squad.

But the Watford representative stopped short of condemning those who did boo when asked if he believed that was acceptable.

The issue has ignited again after several England football players were racially abused following Sunday's Euros loss.

The Observer asked Mr Russell for his views on footballers taking the knee and whether he thinks it is acceptable to boo those who did.

He said: "Whilst this topic is about far more than the view of any one individual, as I spoke about in Parliament just this week I strongly believe in the freedom of speech and freedom of expression.

"Taking the knee is a peaceful act and whilst I understand there are differences of opinion, I felt Gareth Southgate gave a very powerful outline in his letter on why the England team chose to do so.

"Personally, I would never boo our England squad."

The Government has been criticised for not clearly condemning the booers, with defender Tyrone Mings hitting out at Home Secretary Priti Patel for calling taking the knee "gesture politics".

Mr Russell added: "Over the past few days we have seen some vile racist abuse towards players which I condemn completely.

"There is no place for racism or prejudice in society and I am pleased that in Watford through the incredible work across our interfaith communities we have a strong community spirit which brings people together rather than dividing them."

He also said he is an ambassador for the Nelson Mandela Memorial, has campaigned against racism and prejudice, and was proud to support Watford's Gareth Southgate taking England to the final.
