A council is carrying out works to find out why a road was suddenly damaged in Rickmansworth.
A section of Station Road was damaged on Saturday, July 31, with a picture showing tiles having been ripped from the ground.
Hertfordshire Constabulary says it was called to a report that a drain had collapsed.
Officers attended to put emergency road closures in place before handing the scene over to highways workers.
Hertfordshire County Council says it is investigating why the defect has occurred and is carrying out excavation works today (Wednesday) to see whether it is a surface water issue.
The council aims to reinstate the road and reopen it tomorrow.
A spokesperson from the council added: “However, we will not know until these works are completed exactly what the cause is or exactly what the repair will involve.
“We’re sorry for any inconvenience and we’d like to thank road users for bearing with us while we investigate and repair this problem.”
