Hanging baskets and floral displays have been giving another splash of colour to Bovingdon High Street.

More than 35 baskets have been out since the late spring in the village thanks to the Bovingdon & District Horticultural Society.

On August 4, the beautiful baskets were judged by a representative for the society.

Mike Leon, who was stepping in for Stafford Salt who was unable to make the judging competition, was particularly impressed by the displays from The Gentlemen's Barbers, who came third, and Gary Cullum, publisher of The Village, who finished as runner-up.

Bovingdon Community Library were crowned winners of this year's competition.

The prizes are scheduled to be presented at the horticultural society's autumn show on September 11 at Bovingdon Memorial Hall.

Ron Smith, chairman of the society, congratulated the entries, adding: "Some 25 years ago, Bovingdon & District Horticultural Society had discussions with the parish council about things that could be done to improve the village environment.

"The outcome of those talks was that society would look after the plantings at the village gates and would arrange for hanging baskets to be supplied to shopkeepers."

Mr Smith added: "We encourage as many shopkeepers to participate and order the baskets, all with the same planting. Members hang these in late May. It is then down to the shops to do the watering, feeding and dead heading. In hot weather this needs to be done daily, sometimes even twice.

"The society follows up with the judging and prizes. These efforts help to improve the appearance of the High Street."
