A fault with temporary traffic lights caused major delays for motorists trying to leave Tesco and a retail park, a council has confirmed.

Drivers were left stuck in Waterfields Shopping Park car parks on Monday afternoon, with people taking to social media to vent their frustration over the delays.

One person claimed that drivers had been “stranded for hours” whilst another said the scene was “gridlock”.

Works are being carried out in Waterfields Way until September 3 to refurbish some of the traffic signals on the road, with temporary traffic lights that match permanent lights being put in place to control traffic.

West Watford county councillor Nigel Bell emailed Hertfordshire County Council on Monday asking officers to "urgently" look into the problem to stop "unnecessary stress" for residents.

The council has confirmed that the temporary lights failed yesterday, causing congestion and major delays around the car parks.

“A new set of temporary signals has been taken to the site to replace the failed ones,” a council spokesperson said.

“The works are due to finish on September 3 and the temporary lights will remain in place until the permanent traffic signals are ready to be switched back on.”
