A busy town centre road is set to undergo a makeover to improve the look and feel of the area.

The two-month project starting from mid-September will renovate Market Street in Watford, after businesses and residents backed a series of council proposals.

It includes better cycling facilities, safer cycling routes, new modern street furniture, renewed footway paving, improved drainage and bollards to prevent illegal parking.

It comes following the completion of a £2 million renovation of Watford High Street in 2018, as the council focuses its investment elsewhere in the town.

The council has developed a phased improvement plan for various locations, including St Albans Road, Clarendon Road, Queens Road and the town centre.

According to the council, businesses will be kept up-to-date as the work progresses including regular engagement with them to work in co-operation with their needs.

Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor said: “One of my key manifesto commitments was to improve areas such as this. We must make sure that all of our town can benefit from investment and schemes like these are really important in making Watford a better place.

“The changes will make a real difference to the look and feel of Market Street, making it much more attractive for residents, shoppers and visitors.”

Back in February, the Watford Observer reported that the council is looking at investing £500,000 into Market Street between the high street and the ring road, and a further £450,000 into the other end of Market Street.
