An out-of-school daycare club will shut after Ofsted were forced to take enforcement action in a “disappointing” report.

Little Rascals Out of School, a daycare club offered at Cherry Tree Primary School on Berry Avenue, was warned by the school watchdog back in August that a series of changes were needed following concerns of its quality and standards.

Ofsted issued a legal notice so that improvements were made by September 10 – including improved understanding of safeguarding and children’s behavioural needs, improved communication with parents and providers, and ensuring at least one person with valid first aid training is present at all times.

After an inspection on September 13, Ofsted has said that the club failed to improve its quality and standards and that enforcement is necessary.

It has now been revealed that the contract between the school and Little Rascals will end next Friday (October 22), as the school believes the club's issues does not represent the actual school.

The report published on Wednesday (October 13) states that children’s “safety and well-being are undermined” and that some children do not have resources and activities that are “tailored to their interests”.

Ofsted inspectors also concluded that staff are kind, but “do not enough about some children” to meet their needs.

These concerns mainly applied to the younger children, instead of the older children.

A deputy manager was also not appointed at the time of the inspection, meaning if the manager is not present then there is no one to ensure that staff are performing well.

Specifically, there were safeguarding issues, as Ofsted reports that staff are not fully prepared to recognise and respond to signs of concern about children in a timely manner.

However, Ofsted acknowledged that the club did ensure that a person with first-aid qualifications was present.

Despite enforcement being necessary, Ofsted says that parents report their children like coming to the club and are happy there.

Ofsted concluded by saying it intends to take enforcement action.

However Cherry Tree headteacher Cheska Tyler and CEO James Roach has decided to terminate the contract with Little Rascals.

In a combined statement, the two said: “We have today been given a copy of the report issued by Ofsted for the independent childcare provision 'Little Rascals’ and are extremely disappointed to read the outcome.

“Safeguarding is our highest priority and this report does not reflect practice in our school.

“Parents were made aware on Friday 1st October 2021 that the contract between the school and Little Rascals would be ending on October 22nd 2021.”

Ofsted were contacted for further information.
