Hertfordshire County Council has been consulting on the future of a school building after proposing to close it.

The building in question is at Falconer School in Bushey and is a residential part of the community special school which has up to 92 pupils.

The council has proposed to shut it because it has not been used since 2019. The residence can cater for up to eight pupils at a time.

Consultation letters were sent to interested parties and published online earlier this year which confirmed the secondary boys' school's governing body were supportive of the closure.

Following the closure of the public consultation on November 2, a spokesperson for the county council said: "The school revenue budget will not be affected by this change, as there have been no children using the residential provision since December 2019.

"The county council is reviewing Hertfordshire’s education offer for pupils with social emotional and mental health needs. The future use of the vacated accommodation at the school would be considered as part of this review."

Falconer School is one of six schools in Hertfordshire for pupils with social, economic, and mental health needs.

Since 2014, the council has been operating an Engagement Support Worker scheme, in order to support pupils and their families to improve attendance and educational achievement.

The scheme is said to have been "extremely successful" at Falconer School in providing one to one, family and community-based support and removing barriers to learning and attendance.

And as a result, the need for the residential building has not been needed.

A final decision is still to be made on the future use of the building.
