An “incredible” doctor has died with Covid-19 after a nine-week battle with the virus.

Dr Irfan Halim has made a tremendous mark on the NHS after working for the service for 25 years in various NHS trusts and surgeries.

In 2016, he worked with the West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust for six months as a locum consultant in emergency surgery.

According to his wife, Saila, the consultant collapsed after going into work at Swindon Hospital on September 10 and it is believed he contracted the virus during his time saving lives at work.

He was treated at the Swindon ICU until September 23, before he was transferred to the Royal Brompton to receive treatment on life support.

“He fought hard to be with his children every day,” said his wife on a GoFundMe page set up to support the family.

After nine weeks being treated, he died last Sunday (November 14) at 7.51pm “peacefully” while his wife held him in her arms and whispered prayers into his ears.

Since the pandemic struck, the doctor dedicated his time to saving lives of those affected by Covid and dealing with other patients who needed care.

His wife wrote: “Irfan you gave me fifteen magical years as your wife, four beautiful children, wonderful memories that will last me until my remaining days in this world.

“You gave 25 dedicated years service to the NHS working as a Consultant General Surgeon.

“Please remember him in your prayers and duas and mountains of strength for his children for the pain of losing a wonderful, beloved father at such a tender age.

“Irfan you were not only my best friend but a best friend to all our children and so many others.”

The GoFundMe page was set up as Halim was described as the “sole breadwinner” of the family.
