Riders of Beryl Bikes in Watford covered more than 260,000 kilometres in 2021.

Figures released by Beryl show its pedal bikes and e-bikes did 97,084 journeys in the town during the year and travelled 269,641km.

This is equivalent to over six times around the globe.

A survey also revealed what the mode of transport was most often used for.

It found 59 per cent of journeys taken in Watford were for leisure, while 64 per cent of riders have been cycling more often or much more often since joining Beryl.

Commuters also felt the most important factor when choosing a micro mobility service is  convenience, with 88 per cent of users citing this as ‘Very important’.

This was followed by cost (87 per cent), and safety (77 per cent).

Beryl CEO Phil Ellis said: "We are delighted to see so many people in Watford making use of our scheme, in what has been a very challenging year for everyone.

"The figures show that efficient and well delivered micromobility systems can quickly become a popular part of the local transport network, providing people with a wider choice of how they travel.

“By getting more people out of the car and using our bikes and scooters, Beryl will continue to play a key role in boosting public health and reducing traffic congestion as well as improving air quality and reducing carbon emissions.’’
