The subway leading to Vicarage Road stadium is getting a Watford FC-themed makeover as part of a £55k project.

It is part of a joint scheme between Watford Borough Council and the county council to upgrade the path under Exchange Road commonly used by fans to go to games.

Contractor MurWalls will renovate the subway with freshly painted walls, Hornets-themed artwork and anti-graffiti coatings, with both Watford’s mayor and Watford FC covering the £9k artwork cost.

While wall tiling at the subway will remain, there will be frames of Watford FC posters placed throughout.

MurWalls was also behind the iconic Graham Taylor mural painted in August on the side of a property in Vicarage Road.

It is expected that the repainting and artwork will finish by February, with a separate lighting upgrade to be completed in April.

County councillor Stephen-Giles Medhurst said: "Work started last week with a deep clean and a start on new painting of the walls.

“The project will see the subway transformed with a Watford FC theme throughout.

“The aim is to improve the appearance and encourage more walking in Watford, especially to and from West Watford and the stadium as well as making it much more user friendly."
