It was not long after the end of the Second World War and if you were interested in taking a break somewhere, this sign outside Watford Junction advertising a trip to Dublin may well have caught your eye.

This picture of Watford’s main station was taken c1946 and has been shared by Stephen Danzig in the Watford Observer’s nostalgia Facebook group ‘We grew up in Watford’.

It was taken at a quiet time at the station, with only a handful of people making their way in to catch a train while a lone car is parked outside.

Next to the Dublin advert for 21/6 – “I wonder how that equates to today’s money?”, Stephen asked – is a sign for the station’s temperance refreshment room.
