A parking company has been asked to cancel fines it handed to drivers caught out by new restrictions at a retail park in Watford.

Landowner Royal London says it is working with UK Parking Control to waive penalty charge notices given to drivers who have recently visited Century Retail Park in Watford.

Motorists complained both to the Observer, to town mayor Peter Taylor, and on social media that they had been given a ticket after a new restrictions were introduced.

Believed to have come into force in early December or just before, the complaints centred around the fact the new restrictions weren't signposted well enough or advertised properly.

An unconfirmed number of drivers were given £100 fines, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.

Two issues were raised by drivers; the first allegation being that it wasn't made clear enough that the maximum amount of parking had been reduced from four hours to three.

The second was that parking is prohibited outside of the hours of 7.30am until 10.30pm, even though Aldi opened from 7am over Christmas and KFC does not close until 11pm. It's understood drivers were fined for entering the car park at around 7am during the festive season.

After being approached by the Observer about the issues raised, a spokesperson for Century Retail Park owner Royal London Asset Management (RLAM) confirmed additional signage is to be put in, parking hours are to be updated to mirror shopping hours, and work is to take place to cancel fines and reimburse those who may have paid a fine already.

They said: "Century Park Watford is busy with popular national retailers, and the car park spaces exist for the benefit of customers using the retail facilities.

"Following the recent installation of signage by UK Parking Control (UKPC) listing changes to parking hours, Royal London Asset Management has contacted UKPC to ensure that the hours of operation mirror the opening hours across the retail property.

"RLAM will seek to ensure that additional signage is placed on site to make customers aware of the updated parking hours.

"RLAM is working with UKPC to cancel any penalty charge notices issued as a result of these changes and to reimburse fines paid."

The Observer understands the work to reimburse and cancel charges relates to drivers who were fined for exceeding the three-hour stay as well as those who parked outside of 7.30am until 10.30pm.

Car parking at Century Retail Park will remain a maximum of three hours.
