A police force has withdrawn some of its vehicles after becoming aware “there may be an issue" with them.

Hertfordshire Constabulary says the vehicles removed from its fleet will not been in use as work is carried out to “examine any risks”.

But the force has confirmed that it does have substitutes that are available as replacements.

It comes following reports that police are being told not to pursue criminals at high speeds in their high-powered BMW vehicles.

The Northern Echo reported that forces up and down the country have reportedly advised officers to avoid pushing the cars, and not exceed the speed limit, over safety fears.

However, Hertfordshire Constabulary has confirmed that its substitute vehicles are still authorised for pursuit should one need to be carried out.

A spokesperson said: “We are aware there may be an issue with some vehicles in our fleet and they have been withdrawn from operational use as a precautionary measure whilst the National Police Chiefs’ Council works with fleet managers to examine any risks.

“There are substitute vehicles within our fleet available as replacements. The safety of officers and the public is always our main concern.”
