Engineers have finally found the source of a gas leak that has forced a road off the Dome Roundabout to shut.
There has been no access off the major roundabout into St Albans Road towards Garston for at least seven days.
Gas supplier Cadent has dug into the road surface forcing St Albans Road to be partially closed.
Despite the road being closed since January 28, it has taken until today (February 4) for engineers to locate the leak. The supplier reportedly had to book for a camera to help detect it.
However, Woodside & Stanborough county councillor Tim Williams received a message from an officer at Hertfordshire County Council this afternoon confirming the leak has now been found and repairs are underway.
The county council is hopeful the repairs will be completed over the weekend but the road surface will still need to be reinstated.
At this time, the council is not extending Cadent's current permit of until Monday Feburary 7 to complete the work, but it hasn't ruled out that St Albans Road may still be closed on Tuesday. It's dependent on how much progress Cadent makes over the weekend.
Cadent has already started filling in some of the holes it dug up, after narrowing down where the leak was, and this reinstatement will continue over the weekend.
The final job will be to fill in the hole above where the gas leak has been found.
St Albans Road remains open for drivers heading towards the Dome Roundabout from the direction of Garston.
Cadent has acknowledged an approach from the Observer this week seeking further details about the incident but the company has not yet provided a statement.
