The restoration of a historic home in Watford has been welcomed by a councillor who campaigned to save the property.

Little Stratford House in Langley Road is undergoing extension work having been bought at auction after being saved from demolition.

Nascot ward councillor Mark Hofman says he has spoken to those behind the work and that they are transforming the property back into a family home.

The restoration includes keeping a green garage built by urban planner Max Lock in the 1930s and is believed to be one of the few remaining examples of his work.

Cllr Hofman said: "The distinctive curved garage is just one of many special historical features that add a wealth of character to the Nascot Conservation Area.

"It was left to deteriorate as its future was being resolved, it was overgrown, untidy, and crying out for someone to come in and restore it to its former glory.

"The restoration of this prominent family home on Langley Road will make it a welcome addition to the community, which will enhance the area."

When the property went to auction last spring, auctioneer Tony Limbrick, from Network Auctions, said: "This is an enviable opportunity to create a unique family home of style and character in this sought after location.

"This property is brimming with potential and will be a stunning home which continues to contribute to the character of the location.

"The distinctive crescent shaped double garage will be retained for future generations to enjoy."

The property was listed in an auction held in March 2021 but the price it was sold for is not publicly available.

Previously, plans to partly demolish Little Stratford House, including the garage, refurbish and then extend it to create five flats was turned down by Watford Borough Council and an appeal was rejected as well.
