An affordable housing development named in honour of Watford legend Luther Blissett has been officially unveiled.

The club's record goalscorer was present to see the completion of 17 new homes in Raphael Drive in Watford.

Luther Blissett House comprises of 12 three-bedroom flats, five two-bed flats, and a community hub on the site of the former Centrepoint Community Centre.

All of the homes are for social rent, which is typically approximately half the cost of renting a similar property on the private market, while the hub is open to residents, charities, youth groups, and sports clubs.

Mr Blissett said: "When I was growing up in social housing, it was almost like a school uniform. No one was looking at what other people had and thinking of themselves, we all just looked after each other and that created a strong, caring community.

"That’s why I’m so proud to be given the opportunity to put my name to this – I hope these homes will bring their residents a sense of stability and community comparable to what I experienced."

This project is the latest development in a £15.2 million programme between housing association Watford Community Housing and Watford Borough Council for 56 new homes for social rent in Watford.

Tina Barnard, who is chief executive at Watford Community Housing, added: "With living costs rising for people across the country, it is more important than ever that we continue to provide low-cost homes for rent.

"We’re proud of the dedicated partnership between Watford Community Housing and Watford Borough Council that is consistently delivering homes for local residents in need of affordable homes."

Watford mayor Peter Taylor added: "It is so important that we have good quality and affordable homes for local families. I made a commitment to deliver these homes for social rent when I was standing for election.

"I am pleased that by working with Watford Community Housing, I have been able to deliver on this promise."
