Pupils from Rickmansworth School were honoured to be part of a "remarkable" experience after joining royalty and world leaders for the Commonwealth Day celebrations at Westminster Abbey.

The students from the Scot's Hill school travelled to London on Monday to join other children and young people from across the UK for the largest annual multi-faith service in the UK.

The congregation, which returned to the Abbey after last year's celebrations were held during lockdown, included the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, other members of the Royal Family, the Prime Minister, Commonwealth heads of state and specially invited guests.

Emily Bowman, an Eco-Committee student at Rickmansworth School, said: "It was an honour to represent my school at the Commonwealth ceremony. To be in the Abbey with such an abundance of incredible world leaders was remarkable; overall the experience was so wonderful."

Richard Titley, assistant headteacher at the school said: "The event was a wonderful celebration of the Commonwealth and we were delighted to have been invited as many of our school community have links to the 54 member states."

The service has been held at Westminster Abbey since 1972 and celebrates the unity and diversity of the modern Commonwealth, aiming to foster a greater understanding of the role and achievements of the 54 member states with a combined population of 2.4 billion people.
