Plan agreed to make Radlett accident hotspot safer

A county councillor says the junction in Radlett has been an accident hotspot for "as long as she can remember" and says she has been contacted numerous times by locals.

On some occasions, crashes have even caused a house on the corner of Station Road and Aldenham Road to be struck and damaged.

Cllr Caroline Clapper says highway engineers have repeatedly looked at the area but says none can be exactly sure why collisions are happening.

Cllr Clapper said: "So many engineers have modelled it and they don’t know what is causing the crashes. There are so many different types of accidents.

"Personally, I think people are coming up and down Station Road and there not seeing its actually a junction because the road is on a slope. I would like to think the majority are not caused by local drivers because they are aware of the junction."

Work has taken place over the years to try and resolve the problem but Cllr Clapper says increased signage and anti-skid markings "are not doing the job".

She has now managed to secure £72,000 of investment, funded from her county locality budget, to raise the junction and make it more visible.

Cllr Clapper said: "This is something that has been suggested by locals. Every single measure put forward so far hasn’t worked so its time to put a stronger scheme in place."

The road is also set to be narrowed slightly for drivers in Aldenham Road travelling from the direction of the Red Lion pub with measures installed to intentionally slow drivers sown as they approach the problem junction.

Cllr Clapper added: "I committed to residents that if the last set of alterations at the junction did not work, then I would pledge the majority of this years’ budget to a much fuller scheme to try and resolve this issue for once and for all, and finally make this junction safer.

"After numerous meetings, discussions and debates with officers, I am delighted to inform I have now agreed a scheme with highways to be implemented."
