A section of busy road "riddled with potholes" is set to be resurfaced towards the end of the summer.

North Watford county councillor Asif Khan says he has become "exasperated" waiting for Hertfordshire County Council to commit to repairing Gammons Lane.

As a result, he has committed £20,000 from his annual £90,000 annual highways locality budget to getting the road resurfaced.

He said: "The road surface has deteriorated badly and is riddled with all sorts of potholes. Residents and other road users have rightly complained about the terrible state of the road.

"It could not wait any longer for the county council to get round to it at some unspecified point if we're lucky. A decent pothole-free road should not be down to pot luck.

"Despite lobbying, they wouldn't commit, so now I have secured the works and have been advised they're scheduled for August 23 during the school holidays."

The section of Gammons Lane that will see improvements is by Callowland Recreation Ground and Beechwood School.

Watford Labour party campaigner Seamus Williams added: "Cuts to budgets have left many roads in desperate need of resurfacing. It is vital that they are kept safe for drivers and cyclists alike and I am glad that Asif has been able to secure this important work that local residents had been calling for."

Phil Bibby, who is the councillor in charge of highways in Hertfordshire, says other roads have "priority at this time".

The Conservative member said: "Our engineers are aware of the condition of Gammons Lane, and we have it in mind for future works.

"Although it is acknowledged the surface is reaching the end of its life, the defects are usually shallow and, as such, whilst they can give an uncomfortable ride and make the road look tatty, they would not usually be considered hazardous.

"When prioritising maintenance of our 3,000 miles of roads, regrettably, we can’t do everything we might want to do all at once and, in this case, some other roads will have priority for works in the current programmes."

Cllr Bibby continued: "However, to give real local influence, the council established the highways locality budget scheme many years ago to each county councillor to spend in their area on local priorities that might not otherwise be covered by our main programmes of work.

"I am delighted to see that County Councillor Khan is using his budget, as intended, to resurface a section of Gammons Lane."
