Derelict land formerly used as a primary school looks set to be sold off by the county council.

The land at the former Meriden school in Harvest End has been out of use ever since the school was closed by Hertfordshire County Council in 2004/05.

The buildings have been demolished but as of yet there has been no redevelopment of any sort on the land, which the council owns the freehold interest of.

But later this week, the council will ask a panel of its members to approve a proposal to "dispose" of the land on the Meriden estate on the outskirts of Watford.

The council says a real estate developer called Herts Living Ltd is interested in buying the site and is negotiations with the council.

Papers to be presented to the panel on Friday (April 1) state it is "anticipated a sale of the site at open market value should realise a capital receipt in excess of £1 million in 2022/23" for the council along with savings from maintenance and managements costs.

The council says disposing of the land will "ensure smooth administrative passage of any future sale" of it.

The proposal does not include the school's playing fields, which the county council also owns.

Land at the former Meriden school has been included in Watford Borough Council's draft local plan, which lists sites deemed appropriate to build on to meet Government housing targets for the town.

The plan states that 132 homes could be built on the land.
